There are currently 2 systems with asteroids orbiting a planet, Vulcan and Veritas.
You are able to maneuver your ship with a special laser to heat and melt/explode an asteroid so as to harvest rare minerals from it
Several new minerals are available for research on your space station or sale at the contract boards
